Medicare Changes Coming in 2027: What East Tennessee Seniors Need to Know

September 5, 2026·Senior American Insurance Group

Every fall, Medicare beneficiaries across the country face the same question: is my current plan still the right fit?

For 2027, that question matters more than ever. Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans are allowed to change their premiums, copays, drug formularies, and provider networks each year — and many plans across Tennessee are doing exactly that.

Here's what East Tennessee seniors need to know before the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) opens on October 1st.

What Is the Annual Enrollment Period?

The Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 1st through December 7th each year. During this window, Medicare beneficiaries can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan (or vice versa)
  • Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Join, switch, or drop a Part D prescription drug plan

Any changes made during AEP take effect on January 1st of the following year.

Important: October 1st is also the date when insurance agents can officially begin reviewing the new 2027 plan details with you. Before that date, the new plan information isn't yet available for comparison.

What's Changing for 2027?

While final plan details are released on October 1st, here are the types of changes that commonly affect Medicare beneficiaries each year:

Medicare Advantage Plans

  • Premiums may increase or decrease
  • Copays and coinsurance for doctor visits, specialists, and hospital stays can change
  • Provider networks may shrink — meaning your current doctor may no longer be in-network
  • Extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage may be added, reduced, or eliminated

Part D Prescription Drug Plans

  • Drug formularies (the list of covered medications) are updated annually
  • Tier placements for your specific drugs may change, affecting your out-of-pocket costs
  • Pharmacy networks may be adjusted

What This Means for You

If your plan changes and you don't review your options during AEP, you'll be locked into whatever your current plan becomes for all of 2027. That could mean higher costs, a different network, or reduced benefits — without you ever choosing it.

Why a Free Policy Review Matters

The best way to protect yourself from unwanted surprises is a free Medicare policy review with a licensed local agent.

At Senior American Insurance Group, our agents are based right here in East Tennessee. We know the local providers, the regional plan options, and the specific changes that affect our neighbors.

Starting October 1st, we can officially sit down with you and go through every 2027 change that may affect your plan — side by side, in plain English, with no pressure.

Here's what we cover in a free review:

1. Your current plan — premiums, copays, drug coverage, and network 2. The 2027 changes specific to your plan 3. Your alternatives — other plans available in your area that may serve you better 4. Your decision — we give you the information; you make the call

It takes about 30 minutes and costs nothing.

Don't Wait Until the Rush

Every year, the weeks after October 1st get busy fast. Seniors across East Tennessee are all reviewing their plans at the same time, and appointment slots fill up quickly.

The smart move is to book your free review now, before the AEP rush begins. We'll have your appointment scheduled and ready to go the moment October 1st arrives.
