One of the most common questions our agents hear from East Tennessee seniors is: "What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement — and which one should I get?"
It's a great question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your health, your budget, and how you like to use your coverage. Here's a plain-language breakdown.
Original Medicare: The Starting Point
Before we compare the two options, it helps to understand what they're both built on top of: Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
Original Medicare covers hospital care (Part A) and doctor visits and outpatient services (Part B). It covers a lot — but it doesn't cover everything. There are deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. And there's no cap on what you could owe in a year.
That's where Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement come in. Both are ways to fill those gaps — but they work very differently.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Instead of using Original Medicare directly, you get your Medicare benefits through the plan.
How it works: You typically pay a monthly premium (sometimes as low as $0), plus copays when you use services. The plan has a network of doctors and hospitals you need to use.
What it often includes: Many Advantage plans bundle in Part D drug coverage, plus extras like dental, vision, and hearing — benefits Original Medicare doesn't cover.
The trade-off: You're working within a network. If your doctor isn't in the plan's network, you may pay more or not be covered at all. And your costs can vary depending on how much care you use.
Medicare Advantage may be a good fit if:
- You want a lower monthly premium
- You're generally healthy and don't use a lot of specialist care
- You want extras like dental and vision bundled in
- You're comfortable with a network of providers
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Medicare Supplement plans — also called Medigap — work alongside Original Medicare. You keep Original Medicare, and the Supplement plan pays some or all of the costs Medicare doesn't cover.
How it works: You pay a monthly premium for the Supplement plan. In return, most or all of your Medicare cost-sharing (deductibles, copays, coinsurance) is covered. You can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare — nationwide.
What it doesn't include: Medigap plans don't cover prescription drugs. You'd need a separate Part D plan for that.
The trade-off: Monthly premiums are higher than many Advantage plans. But your out-of-pocket costs when you use care are much more predictable — often close to zero.
Medicare Supplement may be a good fit if:
- You have ongoing health conditions and see specialists regularly
- You travel frequently and want coverage anywhere in the country
- You want predictable costs and don't like surprises
- You're willing to pay a higher premium for peace of mind
